3R IN SCHOOL

The Waste Management Association of Malaysia (WMAM) and the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) have embarked on a three-month recycling campaign, for the second year running, to inculcate and revive the spirit of recycling amongst school children.
3R (REDUCE,REUSE,RECYCLE)  WMAM & MBSA 2011 attracted 37 schools from the Shah Alam district for the campaign, which started on May 1 and will run till July 31.
The number of prizes for this year’s event has been increased to ensure that more schools are rewarded for their efforts.
The campaign is divided into two categories – primary and secondary schools – and requires participants to collect items like aluminium cans, plastic bottles and papers for recycling.
The school with the highest weight of recyclable items collected in each category will win RM1,300 in cash.
Schools placed second to fifth will get RM1,100, RM900, RM800 and RM700, respectively.
Schools in the sixth to 10th places will not go home empty-handed as they will each receive a consolation prize of RM200.
Meanwhile, primary and secondary schools that accumulate the most aluminium and plastics, in terms of weight, will also bag special awards of RM600 for each category.
Speaking at the campaign launch, WMAM managing director Ho De Leong said the campaign would help to spread the word about the importance of recycling and encourage students to develop recycling habits from young.
“It is our goal to emphasise the importance of recycling amongst school children so that they will not only grow up to be responsible adults but also influence others, especially their family members, to carry on the good work,” said Leong.
Last year’s campaign was a great success with a whopping 98,276kg of recyclable items collected by 25 participating schools.
“We are honoured that MBSA has agreed to work with us again in this campaign. We are also grateful for the cooperation of Alam Flora Sdn Bhd and the district education offices, namely Petaling Perdana, Petaling Utama, Klang and Gombak who will be helping us,” said Leong.
Also present at the campaign launch was Shah Alam mayor Mazalan Md Noor.
